How to Make Harry Potter Monopoly

The images below are just previews of what I'm talking about. If you're just here for the printable files, you can find them here. JUST DON'T SELL IT.

It's a lot of files, and they probably require some description.

"Spells" are Community Chest cards and I just printed them on thick yellow paper (because that's the old school Monopoly design). "Potions" are Chance and printed on thick orange paper. Both are standard US Letter size. The printable is designed to print front/back on a single sheet of paper, but you can just glue the two sides together.

All of the property cards are also designed to print front/back on a single sheet of paper, you just have to figure out which way to rotate the paper to get it to work. Or you can just glue the two sides together.  I printed them off on two sides of the same sheet of thicker paper, then covered both sides with Mod Podge to try to thicken it up more and also protect it.

The board has to be printed on larger paper, and even then you have to print two halves. The paper is 17x22. Cut along the black outer edge, and cut exactly on the white edge. I just Mod Podged it onto a Monopoly board that came in the cheapest set I could find. The two halves should line up with the split in the board. That was the trickiest part of the entire operation. You have to line up the edge and then evenly press on the rest of the board, with particular care in the fold. But, this was one of my first experiences with Mod Podge, so maybe it'll be a lot easier for Mod Podge experts out there.

Finally the box can be printed on two sheets of 17x22, one for the top, one for the bottom.

Great work on the board, and thank you for sharing your source files.

  5. @Deno - So far we've just used the standard Monopoly pieces, but I want to eventually buy Harry Potter Scene It. I'm pretty sure that game has some Monopoly-like tokens.

    1. when harry potter books first hit big, i bought a small box of harry potter "magic items"; one may either use the box as a tree decor, or the 6 individual items. i bet you could find one online somewhere. i'll do a quick search, & paste a url if i do find one! {yvw!!} ;-) 8-)

Only ONE left in stock, $44.00 ~ hurry & snatch it up!! i think i paid less than $10.00 for mine originally.

      There is also THIS:

If those are individual items, like the 6 in the one i have, then you would have even more great choices for game pieces!! Btw, i would do some more searching; SURELY you could find them for far less elsewhere!! {This 2nd one costs $64.00!!!!} :O

    8. I was able to buy a whole pack of 30 Harry Potter game pieces from various games and several dice too from ebay. I buy games at the thrift stores and was missing one game piece from Mystery at Hogwarts and it came in that pack. I now have 4 specific tokens from Scene It game for my homemade Harry Potter Monopoly that is in progress. I've had the board printed but unfortunately it doesn't fit the 19.5" X 19.5" board I had planned it for as they could only do 20" X 20". Luckily I also had a second Monopoly board that folds in 4 and surprise, it will fit perfectly with a small border. I'll have to cut the printout into 4 but believe it'll be much easier to glue on that way. I've borrowed from all over for my game and have added a few touches of my own. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

  27. I made this for the 8 year old I nanny for and he loves it!

I was able to download the board. When I clicked on the picture I got an error, but then at the bottom right there was an option to download and that worked. My problem was that the file was too big to print. I had a friend divide each file into 4ths and save as jpgs. Then I printed on my own printer. My board was not the same size as was mentioned in the blog, so I measured it, then divided it in half and then divided that by 4(since I had each file divided into 4ths). Then I inserted each file as a picture into Microsoft Word and used the format feature to choose the exact width and height to print. Then I modge podged it all onto the board. I used the Harry Potter Scene It tokens as playing pieces. Bought just the tokens on ebay for under $5. I also added the original car and boot(Weasley's car and portkey) so there are 6 pieces.

  42. Hello Harry Potter Fans! I just finished making this board and putting everything together, and I wanted to share with you the pieces that I got, and the money that I made using these templates.

The money can be found here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1dE8dblXgPNcFc5MUdFTXdQRkk&usp=sharing

    Hotels I used: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/parts/castle-dark-blue
    Houses I used: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/parts/hovel-green

The playing pieces I used were from Harry Potter Scene it. You can get these from Ebay, or if your lucky to find one in a goodwill/resale shop you can snatch the pieces from there, but they work perfectly!

You can also go to your local game card shop to get dice that fit the theme as well. We got ours from gencon.

I took the resources here and had them printed at Office Max. I didn't have any problems there, but I suggest that you have them cut them instead of cutting them yourself.. I made this mistake and regret it now. Anyway, the printing of everything (excluding the money because I could print it on paper at home) cost me about 45 dollars. (They were also having a sale on the 18x24 paper that day)

I also got a new game board in the box from walmart for 5 bucks.

    2. First off - OMG this is soo totally awesome. The time and energy put into this is unbelievable. These templates will help me to make some pretty epic Christmas gifts. After reading through all the ideas and tips and tricks, I have some different thoughts about the money - I think I may be able to create coin shaped money for Galleons Sickles and Knuts, and if I succeed I will definitely share my findings with everyone. And Cindy, kudos on finding the dice and thinking of using the castle and hovel pieces from the Disney Monopoly. They will fit in perfectly!!

  45. So, I recently found this on pinterest and made it for a family member for a Christmas gift. I used modge podge for the board and box. And, decided to try spray adhesive for the property cards. I wish I had used the spray for the board & box as well. It worked SO much better! The modge podge is too wet.... It wrinkles the paper...

Also, the 2 sided printing is almost perfect for the spell & potions cards. The lines are offset by just a few hairs. I attempted to print 2 sides on the property cards - I did the first page only. Total bust. The front/back of the cards have to be in the exact same position for them to print correctly. i.e. - The top cards on page one back is portkey - floo - broomstick - Hogwarts express. Page one front you have them listed in reverse order... Hogwarts express, broomstick, floo, portkey... Change up the order so they are the exact same from left to right and top to bottom, Two-sided printing would be perfect. :)

The spray adhesive worked really well for those cards, tho. :)

Thanks for your hard work. I cannot wait for Christmas morning! :)

    1. what did you use to spray the mod podge and which stores are they available in and for how much?

  46. No need to reload any files. The board and box files are too large to open and other users don't realize they need to only download. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. For some reason it won't open the board pdf's. Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  48. For those frustrated at trying to get to the files, this worked for me!
I tried both IE and Google Chrome, but couldn't save the files to my PC with either. There is no "print to file" option any longer either, I guess (Win7 64-bit). Both opened the files with a black background behind the picture.
The board and box files no longer seemed to exist, and I didn't want to print the others just yet. I wanted to save them, but could only open them on-line and print at that time :-(
I tried right-clicking and left clicking in both browsers. Neither worked. Then, in Google Chrome, at the very bottom right (outside the frame, sort of) is a blue box that says "open" and beside it, a down -arrow that actually downloaded the PDFs! On the larger ones there were warnings, but I downloaded anyway and now have the files. Hooray!

  49. So, I wanna print this out, but I'm translating it to Portuguese because not all of the people I'd play this with know English. I'm covering up the English in photoshop and placing the translation on top... but, when I save it (saving it as pdf, just like the originals here), the quality isn't as good... the letters get kinda smudged... I'm far (very far) from being a photoshop expert (I'm actually surprised that I managed to do this much), so does someone have any tips or any idea what I might be doing wrong? Aside from that, it looks pretty good.

  64. I am sure you have almost completely given up on reading or replying to the comments on this feed. While this amazing project of yours may be one of the reasons you've become an overnight celebrity in Potterverse bringing much traffic to your blog and G+ page, it is with good reason. You work is astounding, and that's phrasing it mildly. There are many imitations out there of people sell these(despite copyright infringement), and yet yours is still the best created. Your fame for such is quite earned.

I would however, like to request on the slightest possibility that you will read, and even slighter possibility that you'll reply (since this feed shows no reply from you in almost two years) if you wouldn't mind sharing the AI (illustrator) files for these with me. I honestly love everything about your design and do not wish to alter it, but would like to use it to build currency from while maintaining continuity through the game. There are many awesome icons and images you've most likely created, that I would love to implement into currency for the game. While others on the web have created such (most likely because you haven't taken on that project) I would like to keep everything consistent with your design and creation.

One of your "Potion" Cards says "Pay poor tax of 255 sickles, or 15 galleons." It would be awesome if I could use your files to incorporate that into the currency and even change "Pass GO collect $200" into said currency. I understand that you my not want to release your work, which is why I assume (despite the many requests for PDF formats) you made it into PDF's. I can assure you that anything I am able to make from it, will never be sold or distributed, it is for my own personal project, and if you'd like I could even send you what I create from it for your wife's version.

I would greatly appreciate your consideration, and again you have done what nobody else has been able to do. And have taken it to a level envious of the creators of the original game. You're fame from it is well deserved. Please reach out with a reply, my email is KAmico@cfl.rr.com. Thank you again for all your hard work.

I will try them on my parents computer when I get there for the holidays but... If you could email them to me that would be great. I appreciate you creating such a beautiful board! Seriosuly... amazing... mrs.sherbert@gmail.com

  67. I've seen many ideas like this on Pinterest, but have never been able to find a real link. Thank you VERY much for your hard work and generosity to share all of these files for Harry Potter fans everywhere!

Looking forward to beginning the crafting!

~for those who are interested, Ebay has many HP Scene It tokens available that other commenters have suggested for game pieces.

  70. Are there supposed to be cards for the "Ministry of Magic Tax" and "Gringotts Banking Fee" spaces on the board? I don't see any in all the pdf files. Other that that I have all the printing, cutting, and gluing finished and I am ready to play the game. Thanks for all your work.

What would your suggestion be? This is the last step to completing this project. I hope to hear back soon. Thanks so much for making this available to the public!

  88. Hi ! I'm loving the job you do on this version of a Harry Potter's Monopoly. I wondered with which software you made it. Is it Adode Illustrator or something like that ? I'd like to offer it to my sister for her birthday, or Christmas if I don't have enough time. But I'm french and I'd like to traduce theses files and changing something on PDFs is hard. Please let me know ! Noiram

  94. I'm sorry but I need to know how to print the board the same size as the template, but with the paper size 8.5 in by 11 in. I'm ok with cutting it and printing on many different pieces of paper, which I would do, but I don't know how. If someone could leave links or tell me how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Also, no hate on the name it just popped up and I don't have any of the accounts to comment as.

  96. I ordered token-sized items from a place called metal miniatures. He has a huge online catalog and I picked items related to the Harry Potter theme - a wizard, a snake etc. All for $2 or less each and his turnaround from time of order was really quick! http://metalminis.com/

  108. Harry Potter Monopoly game is almost done. I've completed all the cards, money and the game board, other than the back. I have a couple of thoughts for that. I've incorporated ideas from various DIYs ie. Marauders Map game instructions (edited to match my game), money from another DIY (again altered to match mine), added pictures to the backs of all my property cards, just to add an extra dimension, collected game pieces from a Harry Potter Scene-It game, found two really nice brown dice that go well with the parchment-like color of the game board and cards. Still have to locate castles & huts from a Disney Monopoly game (or possibly spray paint a set of hotels and houses), and have yet to cover the box. Will be using the box cover from this DIY but have added the school crests to the four top corners. The cardboard insert from the box will likely be covered with a map of Hogwarts or possibly a picture of Gringotts galleons, sickles and knuts. It's been quite the process and have learned quite a bit using various programs located on-line, since this is not a typical craft that I would normally do, as I'm a 65 year old Grandma, but thought it would be a fun game to have to play with my children and grandchildren. I've read all the books twice and do love anything Harry Potter. I'm already thinking of doing other ones to give as gifts to family members, as we're all Harry Potter fans.

    1. Update. Was able to locate castles from a Disney Monopoly game. It came with quite a few so can spray paint them for my game and have enough for a couple more games as there were a lot. Now just to figure out the huts. Might try a type of molding for the roof of the regular houses then spray paint those. Still toying with the idea of poker chips for the money. Can spray paint those in gold for galleons, silver for sickles and bronze for knuts. These would still work easily for properties for example, if the property was worth $240, then that could be 2 galleons and 4 sickles. If the rent was $125, then that could be 1 galleon, 2 sickles and 2 knuts. Would work fine with a little imagination I think.
